Maryland Man Charged in Attempted Robbery of Armored Truck; Second Suspect Hospitalized

Loudoun County Sheriff's Office: Both apprehended after shootout at shopping center.

A Maryland man is in custody and a second suspect is in serious condition at an area hospital after shots were fired Thursday during an attempted robbery of an armored truck in Chantilly, according to the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office.

An alert citizen in the area noticed the activity of the suspects and provided key information regarding their vehicle and route of travel that helped lead to their apprehension, Loudoun police said.

Jarrod A. Williams, 27, of Oxon Hill, Md., is charged with attempted robbery and use of a firearm during the commission of a felony, Loudoun police said. The second suspect is currently hospitalized at Inova Fairfax Hospital, and charges were pending Friday.

Around 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Loudoun sheriff’s deputies responded to the Eastern Marketplace Plaza off Route 50 for a report of an attempted robbery of a Dunbar armored truck. Multiple shots were reportedly fired between the suspects and security personnel assigned to the truck, according to the sheriff’s office.

“The suspects behind this brazen act were quickly apprehended due to the keen observations of an alert citizen and the great working relationship between the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office and the Fairfax County Police Department,” said Loudoun County Sheriff Mike Chapman n a statement Friday.

“Our dispatchers relayed vital details from witnesses and deputies at the scene to our neighboring law enforcement partners, ensuring these dangerous suspects were taken off the streets,” Chapman added.

The suspects were observed traveling in the area of Route 50, and a high-risk traffic stop was conducted by a Fairfax County police officer in the area of the Fairfax County Parkway and Rugby Road. The driver was taken into custody without incident.

The suspect in the passenger seat was found to be suffering from injuries consistent with gunshot wounds. He was airlifted from the scene by a helicopter to Inova Fairfax Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Williams is being held at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center in Leesburg on no bond.
