📰 News we're reading

1. Breaking Ground: Local building permits for 5.13.26 (richmondbizsense.com) — Several significant commercial and temporary-structure projects are moving ahead at Ashland addresses, including work on Thompson Street, North Washington Highway, and College Avenue. A long list of April and early May permits across Hanover, Chesterfield, and Richmond also highlights major data centers, new homes, and renovations that signal continued regional growth.

2. A Raccoon's Excellent Adventure (royalexaminer.com) — Ashland residents just gained a new local legend: a mischievous raccoon that broke into a state liquor store, sampled the goods, and inspired a “Trashed Panda” T‑shirt fundraiser that raised $78,000 for Hanover County Animal Protection. Officials think the same raccoon also hit a DMV and martial arts studio, turning one animal’s chaotic night into a uniquely Ashland story.

3. Ashland unveils sculpture marking new Fall Line Trail extension into town (wtvr.com) — Ashland residents now have an extended stretch of the Fall Line Trail reaching deeper into downtown, marked by a new functional sculpture called “The Hub” near the library. The installation offers maps, seating, and playful bike-themed art, encouraging cyclists, families, and kids to gather, rest, and explore the town while using a growing regional trail that will eventually run from Ashland to Petersburg.

4. Hanover custodian recognized for saving choking student's life (wtvr.com) — Ashland families may be glad to know a quick-thinking custodian at Ashland Elementary School recently saved a choking student by performing the Heimlich maneuver. The Hanover County School Board honored head custodian Michelle Green with a standing ovation, praising her courage and decisive action in protecting a child’s life.

5. The Short Fielder's DNA (baltimorebaseball.com) — A vivid snow-swept doubleheader at Randolph-Macon College in Ashland opens this personal look at one family’s deep baseball roots. The writer traces his father’s love of the game, his own youth leagues, and his son Wick’s journey toward college pitching, all framed as a multigenerational bond built around baseball.
