Greenspring Residents Help Local Students Through the Food for Others Program
During the first week of each month, Greenspring residents help to pack 150 gallon-sized bags of non-perishable food items for the Food for Others organization

Residents from Greenspring’s Continuing Care neighborhood are helping local students in a big way. During the first week of each month, residents help to pack 150 gallon-sized bags of non-perishable food items for the Food for Others organization, which aims to provide food for those in need in Northern Virginia.
Greenspring residents began participating in the program in December 2012 and it continues to gain resident volunteers.
“Our residents take pride in supporting such a worthwhile cause, and they have a great time doing it,” said Greenspring’s Volunteer Programs Coordinator Elke Martin.

Each packed bag contains one package of oatmeal, one nut bar, two drinks, two snacks, and four main meals such as soup, macaroni and cheese, and other pasta products. These bags are then distributed to children in the Fairfax County Public School system who might otherwise go hungry over the weekend. Most of the food donated for the program comes from nearby grocery stores.
