Robinson Continues to Collect Key Wins as State Championship Draws Closer

With state competitions just around the corner, Robinson varsity and novices perform well at Al Urquia.

The Robinson Crew team continued to build on its successful season this weekend, placing in the top three in seven of its 13 races at the Al Urquia regatta at Sandy Run Regional Park this past Saturday.

The 3rd varsity boys came out on top, turning a time of 4:56.80, beating out
second place Thomas Jefferson (05:04.63).

The novice girls also continued their winning streak, beating second place
Madison by less than a boat length.

"The novices have been awesome this year. We had a huge recruiting class
and its really paying off," said Robinson head coach Jon Barrett.

"Racing at the varsity level is a bit different than racing at the novice level, so we'll need to develop these kids, but it is encouraging that they are off to such a fast start. We even have a freshman girl that is challenging the team's all-time freshman erg record.”

1st varsity men's came in third in its final with a time of 4:37.49, and 1st varsity women came in fourth in its final with a time of 5:21.89.

"I thought both varsities did very well, they had pretty challenging weeks
of practice," said Barrett.

2v boys, who won at Smokey Jacobs last week, continued to perform, coming in
second by 1.33 seconds to Madison.

This week, the team put an entry in a new category for Robinson, the men's
Junior 8, consisting of juniors and lower class-men. The innovation paid off
when the boat came in third in its final with a time of 4:55.82.

"The main goal was just to get some kids a race,” Barrett said.” We try to
race everyone each week, so sometimes we need to try new events. The group of
guys really impressed us with that finish."

Looking ahead, the lower boats will compete in the Ted Phoenix regatta this
weekend at Sandy Run for the state championships. The first and second varsity
boats will compete in the Mathews High School Regatta in Mathews, Virginia.  The varsity state championships will be held May 11.
