Robinson Crew Team Members Rally Around Teammate and a Great Cause in "Scope it Out 5K"

Inspired by a teammates's family story, thirteen Robinson Crew members ran in the "Scope it Out 5K," to raise awareness for early detection for colon cancer.

While many of their classmates enjoy family vacations or other leisurely events on spring break, Robinson Crew members put in extra hours of practice.  Between the countless hours needed to condition their bodies and learn to work as a team, as well as the two regattas they raced over the break, there just wasn’t a lot of personal downtime.  So when crew members gave up one of their few free days during spring break to run in a 5K for a non-profit, it was a special sort of sacrifice.

Thirteen Robinson Crew members raced in the “Scope it Out 5K,” a 5K race through downtown Washington, DC, to raise awareness for early detection for colon cancer on Sunday, March 23.

Crew members were inspired to participate by their team member, coxswain Jamie Braverman, whose mom, Robin Braverman, is a member of the Board of Directors of Chris4Life Foundation, a national non-profit dedicated to finding a cure for colon cancer.  Robin herself is a colon cancer survivor and has been cancer free for eight years.

Jamie took time during the week of the 5K to share her story with her teammates and encouraged them to participate.  “She feels very close to these kids,” Robin Braverman said.  “The crew kids are very tight, especially among their boats.”

Given the rigorous fitness regime that all crew members have followed since mid-November, running a 5K isn’t necessarily challenging.  However, since the race fell on the day after the first regatta of the season, it would be easy for the participants to claim they were too tired or too busy to participate.  Yet they happily showed up to support their teammate and the cause.

“The crew team members are very civic-minded,” Robin Braverman said. “While this is not a disease that will touch them personally any time soon, they were very enthusiastic about helping out.”

In addition to Jamie, Robinson Crew Team participants included Hayley French, Anna Santiago, Kelly Casper, Danielle Curtis, Maddy Lewis, Zachary Lewis, Betsy Berenback-Gold,  Lizzie Rush, Jackie Villarroel, Julianna Graham, Eryn Scott, and Carter Zenke.
