EnergyShare Program Offers Cooling Assistance, Up to $600

Eligible households may apply for assistance through August 15th.

This month the Northern Virginia area has seen nine days when temperatures soared to 90 degrees and higher. And there's no relief in sight. Typically, July is the hottest month for Fairfax County, according to The Weather Channel.

For those without air conditioning, the high temperatures combined with high humidity can become life-threatening, especially for the youngest, the oldest, and those who are ill or disabled, according to health experts.

Through its EnergyShare program, Dominion Power offers cooling assistance to those who need help. You can dial 2-1-1 to find out about the company's energy assistance programs. You can also visit this Virginia Department of Social Services Web site for a preliminary eligibility screening.

The program helps with cooling equipment purchases or repairs, and can also help with your electric bill, up to $600. Applications are accepted between June 15th until August 15th. Assistance is based on the availability of funds.
