Lorton historian Irma Clifton will speak about the local history of the women's suffrage movement. Refreshments will be served.
The Burke Historical Society is a group of local enthusiasts interested in exploring and preserving the history of Burke. We are seeking new members who share this interest. No commitment is needed; all are welcome!
Ms. Clifton has been an active citizen in the Lorton community for many years, having been born and raised in the area. She formerly worked for the D.C. Department of Corrections in Lorton, Virginia where she held a variety of positions related to management and security of the correctional institution. While working there Ms. Clifton developed her interest in corrections history and assembled and maintained a museum associated with the Department of Corrections. She also acted as a corrections historian, regularly lecturing on this topic for new employee orientation. Since then, her interest in community history and affairs has led her to volunteer for numerous charity and civic activities including a position as a Lorton history lecturer at the Lorton Senior Center.

Ms. Clifton has also been a volunteer for the D.C. Humane Society, Meals on Wheels, the Lorton Community Action Center, the Lorton Valley Star Newspaper and The South County Chronicle Newspaper where she served as editor. She serves or has served on several community boards including the Laurel Hill Task Force I & II and III, the Federation of Lorton Communities, the D.C. Prison Transition MOA Committee, Chair of the Falmouth Renaissance Commission and on the Board of Directors, Historic Port of Falmouth Association, Inc. In addition, she is President of the Lorton Heritage Society and the Past President and Past Secretary of Historic Stafford, Inc. She is a member of the Fairfax County History Commission from the Mount Vernon District. She is currently serving as volunteer Historian and Museum Collections Manager at the Workhouse Prison Museum at Lorton and has been involved in the planning and development of the Arts Center from its very beginning.
