How Much NoVa Property Taxes Differ From Rest Of State

The difference between average property taxes in Northern Virginia and other parts of the state is striking.

Virginia is in the mid range among states for its property taxes burden, although some counties in Northern Virginia have average property taxes of $5,000 or higher, according to a new analysis from ATTOM Data. The 2017 property tax analysis found that Virginia had the 24th highest property tax rate—1.05 percent—in the country.

Despite its favorable ranking, the analysis found that the average tax amount in Virginia actually increased 3 percent in 2017 when compared to 2016. The average annual property tax in Virginia for 2017 was $3,262 in 2017 and in 2016 that figure was $3,181.

Six Virginia counties — Fairfax, Loudoun, Arlington, Alexandria City, Falls Church City, Fairfax City, — had an average property tax amount of $5,000 or higher. The new tax bill signed into law by President Trump caps the state and local tax deduction, limiting the deduction residents can claim on their 2018 tax returns to $10,000. The highest average property tax amounts were Alexandria City ($8,654) and Arlington ($8,407). Fairfax County had an average property tax amount of $7,774 and Loudoun County had $5,406, according to the analysis.
