Lake Braddock Students Perform in 'Seussical Jr.'

Little Theater group's middle school student shows continue through Thursday evening.

The Lake Braddock Secondary School Little Theater is about to be transformed into a magical place called “Whoville,” in a family-friendly production of "Seussical Jr."

Under the direction of Mary Demarco, 67 middle school Lake Braddock students will share the story of Horton the elephant, as told by the Cat in the Hat, in this adaptation of  the original production of "Seussical," a Broadway hit since November 2000.

The Broadway experience is nothing new to Demarco: “I have a true passion for Broadway music and have been directing shows for over 20 years, at every level: elementary through community theater.”

Demarco, a graduate of Loyola Marymount in Los Angeles, as well as a graduate of George Mason University where she earned a degree in Music, Vocal Performance, is in her third year at Lake Braddock. Demarco began teaching in Fairfax County in 1997 and teaching in general since 1984.

The experience of performing in a musical production is so much more than memorizing lines and practicing songs for these students.  “It is such a positive and fun experience for them," said Deanna Cox, parent of Savannah and Dominique Cox, who are both performing in the production. "They develop stronger connections with others in their school, while demonstrating such dedication to be able to put together a fabulous show in five weeks.”

Demarco couldn’t agree more. “Each student brings something different and wonderfully unique, but together they are amazing!" she said. "Once we become a respectful team, the whole thing blossoms from there. It has been a blast to do this show! The cast is awesome!!!”

The show will be performed through Thursday, Oct. 18,  nightly at 7 p.m. Tickets are $5 at the door.
