West Springfield Fire Among Several Caused By Discarded Fireworks
The fire department responded to several county fires caused by improperly discarded fireworks.
WEST SPRINGFIELD, VA—Firefighters responded to a West Springfield fire started by improperly discarded fireworks on July 4, one of several Fairfax County fires with the same cause.
Around 11:19 p.m., units responded to the 7800 block of Harwood Place after residents noticed a red glow outside. The fire was put out when firefighters arrived. No one was injured or displaced.
Damage was limited to the outside of the home and was estimated to be $1,000.

The incident was among several Fairfax County fires within days related to improperly disposed fireworks. In the early morning of July 5, a fire broke out at an Annandale home, displacing five residents. On July 3, a fire at a McLean home was caused by sparklers thrown in the trash. A firefighter was injured, but no one was displaced.
Fairfax County allows certain types of fireworks for use on private property. Fire officials remind residents to safely dispose of fireworks by placing them into metal containers, dousing them with water, putting a metal lid on and placing the container away from the house.
