1 Person Injured, $30K In Damage Caused By Centreville Townhouse Fire

CENTREVILLE, VA — One person was injured Sunday night in a Centreville area townhouse fire, according to a Fairfax County Fire & Rescue Department blog post.

Units from the Fairfax County and Loudoun County fire department responded around 10:41 p.m., to the 5100 block of Woodfield Drive in the Centreville area for the report of a townhouse fire.

When fire personnel arrived on the scene, they found smoke coming from the rear of a middle unit townhouse. Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze. An occupant of the home was taken to a nearby hospital to be treated for minor injuries. No fire personnel were injured.

A preliminary investigation revealed that one of the two townhouse occupants awoke to smoke and fire in the bedroom. He then awoke the second occupant in the basement of the townhouse. They then evacuated the unit and contacted 9-1-1.

Fire investigators identified an electrical malfunction within a surge proctor in a second-floor bedroom as the cause of the fire, which they determined was accidental. The fire caused an estimated $30,000 in damage to the townhouse, according to the investigators.

The fire displaced the two occupants, who declined assistance from Red Cross services.
