Many Families Enjoy The Clara Barton National Historic Site

The Clara Barton House helps kids learn about the American Red Cross and Clara Barton's Life.

The Clara Barton House is a great place for families to learn about the American Red Cross and Clara Barton's life. The Clara Barton House is not far from were we live. 

This National Park Historical Site has the Junior Ranger Program. The Junior Ranger Program helps children learn about the park while having fun.

On the free tour, you see the house and the rooms, while hearing about their history.

Ranger Keith, said, "In 1975, it was the first unit of the National Park Service dedicated to a woman." Clara Barton was "one of the first women to work for the federal government, in the Patent Office as a clerk." 

"Clara Barton was a good citizen, but wasn't treated as a citizen, wasn't allowed to vote because she was a woman. She led a life of service."

To save costs, the ceilings in the house are covered in bandages. At the time, the house was not in great shape and she did not have a lot of money, so she covered things in bandages.

Clara, age 4, from Herndon, who was named after Clara Barton, was on the tour and asked, "Why did she die?" Ranger Keith said, "She was 90 years old and very sick. She died of double pnemonia".

This year is the 100th Anniversary of Clara Barton's death and there is going to be special events in April. For more information, visit the Clara Barton National Historic Site webpage.
