Fairfax Route 29 Lane Closures Begin For Widening Project
Weekday lane closures on Route 29 between Union Mill Road and Summit Drive, and Sandy Point Lane and Stringfellow Road began on Monday.
FAIRFAX, VA — The Virginia Department of Transportation has announced upcoming lane closures on Route 29 in Fairfax for a widening project.
Weather permitting, these closures will occur on weekdays from Monday, March 9, through Friday, April 3. The affected sections are between Union Mill Road/Centreville Farms Drive and Summit Drive/Buckleys Gate Drive, and between Sandy Point Lane and Stringfellow Road/Clifton Road.
Northbound Route 29 will experience single-lane closures between Union Mill Road/Centreville Farms Drive and Summit Drive/Buckleys Gate Drive. These closures are scheduled from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays, from March 9 through April 2, with a shorter closure on Friday, April 3, from 9:30 a.m. to noon. This schedule applies to the weeks of March 9, March 16, March 23, and March 30.

Southbound Route 29 will also have single-lane closures between Sandy Point Lane and Stringfellow Road/Clifton Road. These closures are planned for 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day, from Monday, March 9, through Friday, March 13, and again from Monday, March 16, through Friday, March 20.
The Route 29 widening project aims to improve safety, traffic flow, and accessibility for bicyclists and pedestrians. The project encompasses reconstructing and widening 1.5 miles of roadway from four to six lanes. Additionally, it will correct vertical alignment to enhance sight distance and add shared-use paths on both sides of Route 29. The project also includes providing connectivity to pedestrian/bicycle trails at the Fairfax County Parkway/West Ox Road interchange.

Drivers should anticipate delays during these periods and are advised to use alternate routes. The Virginia Department of Transportation reported that the overall project is expected to be completed this summer.
