5 Best Blossoming Trees for Northern Virginia Landscaping

Add blossoming trees to your Northern Virginia landscaping with AllGreen Landscape Co. (703) 992-8787

We are extremely excited about all the blossoming trees everywhere. If you wish your Northern Virginia landscaping had more flowering trees this time of year, you can certainly start planning for it now. Here are some of our favorite native species:

1. Flowering Cherries

Although they’re not necessarily natives, we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention the profusion of glorious pink blossoms we enjoy around Washington D.C. this time of year, thanks to a gift from Japan in 1912. Fortunately, these trees do very well here in Northern Virginia and add a great deal of beauty to any landscape. Try weeping and non-weeping species for variety.

2. New American Dogwood Hybrids

Older species of dogwoods, both American and Korean, have had some disease issues in the past. Newer varieties developed here on the Eastern Seaboard are more disease-resistant and drought hardy. They explode with large, broad-petaled white or pink flowers in the spring, deep green foliage in the summer and red-to-purple leaves in the fall.

3. Redbud Trees

Gorgeous purplish-pink blossoms create dramatic lines of color along these trees’ branches in the spring. As hardy, native trees, they are a great addition to any Northern Virginia landscaping project.

4. Magnolia Trees

Another treasure native to our area, magnolia trees add class to any yard with their large white to pink blossoms and shiny, green foliage. Keep in mind that some varieties can prematurely lose blossoms during unexpected frosts. Consider later-blooming magnolia species like the lily magnolia or the Rose Marie.

5 Crabapple Trees

Don’t let the crabby name fool you—these trees grow beautiful, sweet blossoms. Several varieties, specifically the Virginia Crabapple with its fluffy white blossoms, were cultivated specifically for our climate over the past couple of centuries. Its apples can even be used in cider.
