FAIRFAX, VA — Fairfax County Police detectives have charged the 50-year-old Chantilly man who was shot by police with attempted aggravated murder of a police officer, according to a department blog post.

Around 1 p.m. on Tuesday, officers arrived at the home in the 4500 block of Briarton Drive in Chantilly where the victim, who police identified as Robert Jablonsky, lived with his elderly parents.

Earlier in the day, Jablonsky's parents reported to police that their son was behaving in an unstable manner and threatened them.

Police say that no crime had been committed at that time, but officers helped the family obtain an emergency custody order, so Jablonski could receive mental health treatment.

Officers and the parents tried to make contact with Jablonski at 12:56 p.m. in order to deliver the custody order. Jablonski refused to comply with commands from the police. Aware that he might be armed, the officers removed the parents from the home and repositioned themselves outside to de-escalate the situation.

Jablonski then left the home armed with a compound bow and arrow, which he pointed at police.

"That compound bow and arrow, make no mistake about it, is a deadly weapon," FCPD Chief Davis said, during a Tuesday afternoon news conference. "That arrow will go right through our ballistic body armor. One of our police officers, recognizing the deadly threat, discharged his firearm that struck the suspect in the upper body."

Officers administered first aid to Jablonski until rescue personnel arrived and were able to take him to a nearby hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. No police officers or other people were injured at that time, according to the blog post.

"For whatever reason or for a variety of reasons, this man was in crisis today," Davis said, on Tuesday. "That crisis prompted his parents to get Fairfax County Police involved in an effort to keep them safe. I think we did just that."

Following a preliminary investigation, detectives obtained the warrant for attempted aggravated murder of a police officer against Jablonski, who remains in the hospital.

Police identified the officer who shot Jablonski as a six-year veteran assigned to the Sully Police District Station. Following department protocol, the officer was placed on restricted duty pending the outcome the Internal Affairs Bureau's administrative investigation.

The officer's name will be released by Davis within 10 days, unless there is a critical threat to the parties involved or more time is needed for the risk assessment process.

The Major Crimes Bureau is conducting a criminal use of force investigation. Davis will release body camera video, as well as audio recordings of the 911 call for service, within 30 days, as long as it no longer jeopardizes the investigation.

In the blog post, FCPD released photos of the compound bow and arrow involved in Tuesday's incident.
