Fox TV’s So You Think You Can Dance Stars and International Judge teach and perform in the DMV this coming weekend, December 16 th– 18th. Local dance students are getting an early present this holiday season by getting to dance with some of the stars they have seen on FOX.
Jessica Richens & Stanley Glove – SYTYCD Season 11, Ruby Castro – season 13, and Autumn Miller- Jr. SYTYCD Top 10 Finalist, music videos, Disney’s Shake It Up, guest on Dancing with the Stars are a few of the emerging SYTYCD talents teaching in a master class dance workshop and performing in a new show “A Change Is Gonna Come” by “Tokyo” Kevin Inouye. The dance workshops are open to young area dancers and are being held at Creative Dance Center’s Chantilly location this weekend. Workshop dancers and other ticket holders will be the first to see Tokyo’s latest creation – “A Change Is Gonna Come” at John Champe High School in Aldie on Saturday night. The brains behind the show and workshop is creator Tokyo. Tokyo is a force in the international dance community – having choreographed and taught award-winning dance internationally and around the US. Tokyo is a judge for SYTYCD Ukraine, along with being a teacher at the top studios in the US and his own academy. Tokyo is actually a native of Hawaii – where he was raised in a family of high achievers under the watchful eye of his grandfather, Dan Inouye, US Senator from 1963 – 2012. Tokyo’s entry into dance was unconventional. Excelling at mixed martial arts, Tokyo didn’t discover dance until his senior year in high school. His work ethic quickly led him on an international training, performing, and choreographing experience, including dancing with Cirque du Soleil and choreographing the largest musical production in France’s history, “Adam et Eve” among other choreography for music videos, and TV shows, recently including pieces for SYTYCD – Ukraine.
Now raising a family of his own, with dance professional dancer, coach, and teacher Alisha Captain, Tokyo has a strong passion to develop young dancers and support the arts. “The Arts are essential to our society and I am honored to share my knowledge and help grow the talents of so many in the dance community,” says Tokyo. The teachers and performers for this weekend’s MOVE workshop and “A Change Is Gonna Come” show are all mentored by Tokyo. “Tokyo’s knowledge, giving spirit, and commitment to his students is second to none,” says Nijawwon Matthews, a featured dancer and teacher for the Joffrey Ballet School, who has trained with Tokyo. Having visited the DMV for master classes over the years, Tokyo decided to take a more involved approach in the past year. “There are many motivated dancers in the area, yet unlike L.A. or New York there are not the opportunities to experience diverse training opportunities. I feel this area could benefit if these options are more accessible to young dancers,” says Tokyo. His MOVE workshop is open to all aspiring dancers, ages 7 – 19, and ages 5 – 6 with prior approval.
