Help Northern Virginia Birth Services and NoVa Business Directory Raise 5000 Diapers for the Northern Virginia Diaper Bank

The National Diaper Bank states that infants require up to 12 diapers per day, at a cost of $70 to $80 per month per baby. Many families rely on federal programs to provide Food Stamps, the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC), and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). However, these programs do not supply diapers and diaper wipes.

Chantilly, Va. October 3, 2015-Northern Virginia Birth Services (NVBS) a doula, birth and postpartum service provider has partnered with a local digital networking group, The Northern Virginia Business Directory (NVBD) to raise 5000 diapers for the Northern Virginia Diaper Bank (NVDB). The 3-week drive kicks-off with a local business fair on October 3rd and runs through Oct 19th, 2015.

For the fourth consecutive year, Diaper Need Awareness Week scheduled for September 28 – October 4, 2015 will draw attention to the issue and prompt individuals, organizations, diaper banks, communities and elected officials to take action and help get diapers to babies who need them. In 2014, governors and state legislatures in 20 states—Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, New Mexico, Ohio, Oklahoma, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin—along with 85 mayors and county supervisors throughout the country, recognized Diaper Need Awareness Week via official proclamations. More are expected to announce support this year.

“Millions of families struggle every day to provide an adequate supply of diapers for their children, and that is unacceptable,” said Joanne Goldblum, founder and executive director of the National Diaper Bank Network.

“Northern Virginia Birth Services is committed to supporting women, their families and our community.” states Andrea Cordell-Proper, founder of NVBS.” 1 in 3 families experiences a need for diapers. If we can help even one family, and improve our community along the way, than we are doing something right.”

They seek to do much more than that with a goal of 5000 diapers, and have partnered with local Facebook networking group, The Northern Virginia Business Directory with the hope of doing just that.

“NVBD was created to act as a digital networking group to help local businesses,” Explains Marilyn Wiesinger-Martin, founder of NVBD, “we have a great opportunity to help others along the way, so this month we are on “Diaper Duty”. It is our group’s intention to support this cause fully and hope to assist those in need by harnessing the power of social media and networking.”

Local diaper banks rely heavily on drives, in-kind donations by manufacturers and retailers and bulk purchases with donated funds to keep an adequate stock of supplies. Each bank is responsible for collecting, storing and distributing diapers to families in need. Diaper banks distribute both cloth and disposable diapers, wipes and other supplies as well. One of their greatest needs though is raising awareness of the cause.

“We plan to really push this drive using social media and urge others to do so as well.” Patrick Cox, Consultant and co-organizer of the event shares, “By using #diaperneed and #diaperduty the local community can really help raise awareness and ensure “Diaper Duty” is a complete success.”

Diaper Need Awareness Week is an initiative of the National Diaper Bank Network (NDBN) created to mobilize efforts to help make a difference in the lives of the nearly 5.3 million babies in the U.S. aged three or younger who live in poor or low-income families. “Diaper Duty” launches October 3rd, 2015 and runs through October 19th, 2015.
