Speed, Alcohol May Have Been Factor In Crash That Killed Reston Woman: Police

Fairfax County detectives believe alcohol and speed may have been involved in Sunday morning's fatal crash in Chantilly.

CHANTILLY, VA — A 29-year-old Reston woman was fatally injured after a car she was riding in struck a tree early Sunday morning in Chantilly, according to a Fairfax County Police Department blog post.

Officers responded at 4 a.m. for the report of a crash on Poplar Tree Road at Leighfield Street. Estefania Cabrera of Reston was a passenger in a 2017 Toyota Highlander that was heading eastbound on Poplar Tree Road. As the car passed through the Leighfield Street intersection, it drifted off the road and struck a tree head on.

Cabrera was transported to a nearby hospital for the treatment of her injuries. She was later pronounced dead. The driver of the Toyota was also taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries and remained hospitalized on Monday.

Detectives from the Crash Reconstruction Unit conducted a preliminary investigation and believe alcohol and speed may have been factors in the crash.

Cabrera's death is the 19th non-pedestrian related fatality this year.
