Westfield Boys Win State Swim Title in Dominant Fashion

Ratcliff, Xue, Fialas finish the job for Bulldogs

States? You guessed it. Check.

The Westfield Bulldogs boys swim and dive team won the VHSL AAA state championship Saturday with a total of 238 points, 22.5 better than second-place Frank W. Cox (Virginia Beach).

Keyed by its foursome of Kurtis Ratcliff, Brandon Fiala, Richard Xue and C.J. Fiala, the Bulldogs completed their goal of becoming state champions.

The four won the 200-meter medley relay, Westfield’s second relay win on the day. Charlie Keith joined the Fialas and Ratcliff on the team’s 400-meter freestyle relay win. Ratcliff took the individual 100-meter butterfly title and came in second in the 400-meter freestyle, C.J. Fiala won the 100-meter freestyle, Brandon Fiala took second in the 100-meter breaststroke and fourth in the 200-meter individual medley, with Xue coming in third in the IM.

The Northern Region dominated the event, as Langley won the state championship on the girls side. Six of the top 10 teams for the boys came from the region, with Langley finishing third, Robinson fourth, Oakton seventh, Fairfax ninth and Lake Braddock 10th.

Behind the Saxon girls, Oakton finished second, Robinson came in third, West Potomac finished fifth and Yorktown placed eighth.
