Accomplishment: After a successful senior season, the football Sportsman of the Year signed a National Letter of Intent on May 6 to play NCAA Division I Football at Davidson College in North Carolina.

Key to Awesomeness: When he was a young boy, Trey Huelskamp set a goal to play Division I football in college. This fall he will realize that dream as a tight end on the Davidson College Wildcats team.

“Davidson offers me that opportunity [to play for a Division I school] while providing a strong academic environment,” Huelskamp said in an email, “I am looking forward to playing at the collegiate level. I am excited that my hard work has resulted in this opportunity.”

Huelskamp has come a long way since his days on the Chantilly Youth Association (CYA) Anklebiters football team as a seven-year-old. This season he was the leading receiver for CHS, was selected to the All-District and All-Region teams and received an Honorable Mention as an All-Met player. Huelskamp, who also played two seasons of varsity basketball for CHS, was recently named Sportsman of the Year for both football and basketball.

“I think the most remarkable thing about my son is his humbleness,” said Huelskamp’s father, Ken Huelskamp, “He has had quite a few accolades during his football career, including being in Sports Illustrated for Kids as a freshman, but he has always been more concerned about how his team is doing.”

Huelskamp’s humble attitude contributes to his effectiveness as a leader of the Chantilly team. “I was a quiet leader in the past, but my senior year helped me find my voice as a leader,” Huelskamp said. “As one of the captains of the team, I know that upperclassmen help the underclassmen improve in their skills and confidence...We had a great environment on the team this year with upper and underclassmen interacting and pushing each other to get better.”

His father added, “He [Trey] has always been able to be a leader of the team without forgetting he is a member of the team.”

Off the field, Huelskamp is a serious student with a 4.0+ GPA. As an AP Scholar and National Honor Society member, he especially enjoys math and plans to study economics at Davidson.

Huelskamp is also active in a number of extracurricular clubs and organizations at Chantilly High School and in the community. He is a senior mentor in the CHS Freshman Transition Program, a coach for the Rising JV basketball team and is a member of Team More Than Me, Read Across America and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. In addition, Huelskamp is a volunteer intern for the National Republican Committee and participates in Adopt-A-Family with his friends each Christmas.

Huelskamp, who hopes to make the travel squad as a college freshman, is currently working with a trainer in preparation for Davidson’s preseason camp in August. But before he heads down to North Carolina, he has some advice to leave with his high school teammates, including his brother Sean, a sophomore on the varsity football team.

“I hope the impact I have had on the team is the demonstration of how hard work and dedication can help you realize your goals,” Huelskamp said. “The advice I would leave behind is to work hard, perform to the best of your ability and enjoy every second you have on the field.”
