59 teams from Virginia, District of Columbia, and Maryland took part in the regional World Robot Olympiad (WRO) competition. The event was the second largest regional WRO competition in the country and featured nearly 160 elementary and middle school students. The event was held at the Nysmith School for Gifted from Herndon, a champion in promoting STEM. Over the last eight weeks, Robotics for Youth (RFY), a non-profit organization, had conducted workshops and mentored kids in the region to prepare for this competition.
The WRO is an annual competition to develop skills and inspire enthusiasm in STEM by bringing together teams of young people from all over the world and challenging them to use their creativity and problem-solving skills to build robots capable of completing a range of challenges. The theme of this year’s event was ‘Smart Cities’ and featured building the cities of the future.
