Arlington County: Video Proves Coyotes Live Here

Last week, a game camera at Potomac Overlook Regional Park captured the first images of a coyote in Arlington, according to information the county released today.

The county has had reports of coyotes for years, mostly in North Arlington along the Potomac River, but had so far been unable to obtain proof, the county's natural resources manager, Alonso Abugattas, stated in the release.

Coyotes are not native to Virginia. Those found on the East Coast tend to be larger than their western counterparts, according to the release. The animals are extremely cautious, move mostly at night and are quick to adapt to new surroundings.

They also are scavengers.

“Coyotes will make a living wherever they can find food, even in big cities,” Abugattas stated. “I think they are here to stay.”

The county news release indicates "no roadrunner sightings -- yet."
