Mother Charged with 3-Month-Old Baby's Murder

A Manassas woman was arrested Friday and charged with the murder of her 3-month-old son after police said she was responsible for neglect and abuse that led to the child's death in Dale City in 2010.

After a nearly two-year-long investigation, police arrested Tyesha Monique Green, 22, of 7590 Quail Run Ln in Manassas. She is charged with murder and abuse and neglect of a child.

The baby died on May 9, 2010 at a home in Dale City. Green told first responders that the baby had been sleeping in bed with her when she woke up in the middle of the night and found the baby unresponsive. The police investigation found that Green had been smoking marijuana and drinking before going to sleep with the child, the last in what police said was a series of neglectful and abusive practices that led to the child's death.

The medical examiner did not determine a cause of death at the time, but Prince William County Police spokesman Jonathan Perok said that an in-depth forensic investigation since then had found the baby's death to be a result of a pattern of abusive neglect. Perok said Green had had poor prenatal care and the child had received no well-child care and no follow-up after being diagnosed with an infection. The investigation also cited an unsafe sleeping environment as contributing to the child's death.

Green is being held without bond. Her court date was not released.
