ACPS Students Recognize Constitution Week at City Hall

Students from and and Samuel Tucker elementary schools visited on Monday to participate in a proclamation signing by Alexandria Mayor Bill Euille signifying Constitution Week.

Constitution Week is recognized from Sept. 17 to Sept. 23. It was created to emphasize the responsibility of citizens to protect and defend the Constitution, recognize the document as the foundation of the way of life in the United States and to encourage the study of the events that led to the creation of the Constitution in September 1787.

All 39 students in attendance Monday received a copy of The Declaration of Independence and the Constitution along with an Alexandria pin and pen.

Councilmembers Frank Fannon and Rob Krupicka attended the ceremony along with School Board Chairman Sheryl Gorsuch and City Attorney Jim Banks. Krupicka served as one of the chaperones for the group of Mount Vernon students that included his daughter Janelle.

Fifteen members of eight local chapters of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution also took part in the ceremony. The DAR promoted the creation of the law that established Constitution Week in 1956.

Linda Greenberg, Constitution Week chair and historian of the John Alexander DAR chapter, organized the event.
