Alexandria Coronavirus Update: Positive Rate Falls In ZIP Codes
The Alexandria Health Department has released the latest ZIP code breakdown of cases.
ALEXANDRIA, VA — The positive rate of tests continues to fall in all of Alexandria's ZIP codes, according to new coronavirus data from the health department. The city's cumulative totals are 2,439 coronavirus cases, 247 hospitalizations and 57 deaths. No new deaths have been reported in Alexandria since June 26.
Alexandria's ZIP codes had positive rates ranging from 8.1 percent to 24.6 percent in July, compared to 9.9 percent to 30.1 percent in June. The Alexandria Health Department suggested the decline in positive tests "may reflect both increased testing and adherence to public health mitigation strategies."
Here is the comparison of ZIP code data from July 7 to data from June 9 and May 7:

The 22305 ZIP code, which includes the largely Latino community of Arlandria/Chirilagua, continues to have the highest positive rate. In Alexandria, Hispanic and Latino people make up 55 percent of coronavirus cases while representing only 16.8 percent of the population. The health department believes systemic issues like poverty, overcrowding, structural racism and job insecurity have compounded the effect of the coronavirus on vulnerable populations.
"AHD is closely following these disparities and working to provide immediate assistance to members of the community, but the challenge of addressing long-standing community conditions remains a primary focus for AHD and the City," reads a news release from the health department.
A new map provided by the health department shows testing locations in and around Alexandria. These locations provide testing regardless of insurance. Other health care providers may provide testing for their patients but declined to be listed on the map.
Health officials urge all residents to continue taking precautions to reduce the spread of the virus. That guidance includes staying home when possible, especially for people at higher risk for severe illness from the virus. When going out, residents are asked to maintain six feet of distance from others, wear a face covering, and carry hand sanitizer.
