Alexandria Film Festival Returns This Week

An Alexandria filmmaker's movie will be among dozens debuting during the annual independent film festival.

ALEXANDRIA, VA—If you're not interested in the movies playing in theaters, why not check out some new independent films instead?

For 11 years, the Alexandria Film Festival has supported independent films, and it will showcase over 50 films this year from Nov. 9-12. Friday, Nov. 10 screenings are free and run from 10:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. at Beatley Central Library (5005 Duke Street). The remainder of the weekend is at AMC Hoffman 22 Theater (206 Swamp Fox Road).

The event includes 20 premieres and films from the local area and around the world. Movies are short or feature length and have genres ranging from documentaries to children's movies, dramas and comedies. Filmmakers will be on hand for question and answer sessions.

New this year is the Family Showcase with six films for younger audiences Saturday, Nov. 11 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Included is local student Dylan Fox's film "Save Your Future."

The festival will also honor military service members during Veterans Day weekend with a "Salute to Service Members" showcase on Nov. 11 and 12. Active duty service members and veterans can receive free admission with a guest to this portion of the event. Saturday will feature films by two Virginians: "The Two Sides Project" by Anthony Istrico and "Forgive Don't Forget" by Brad Bennett.

Another notable film is "A Change in the Family" by Alexandria filmmaker Sam Hampton, which documents the story of Zo transiting to a man and his family's response.

The festival will conclude with an awards ceremony and reception at 6 p.m.-8 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 12.

The event is entirely volunteer-run with support from sponsors, the City of Alexandria and the Alexandria Commissioned for the Arts. Tickets are $12 in advance and $15 at the door. An all-access festival pass is available for $50.
