ALEXANDRIA, VA — It's not a major election year for Alexandria after 2018 featured mayoral and City Council elections and 2020 brings the presidential election. Nevertheless, Alexandria voters have a few races on the ballot for the Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2019 general election. The election includes races for Virginia House of Delegates and Senate districts as well as Alexandria clerk of court.

Polls are open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Election Day. Voters in line by 7 p.m. will be able to vote. An acceptable form of photo identification is required to cast a ballot in Virginia.

One of five state legislative races in Alexandria has multiple candidates. Democratic Sen. George Barker faces Republican Dutch Hillenburg in the 39th District, which the Virginia Public Access Project designates as strongly Democratic. Sens. Adam Ebbin and Dick Saslaw are unopposed in the 30th and 35th District races, respectively. Saslaw claimed victory in a competitive 35th Senate district primary against human rights lawyer Yasmine Taeb. Dels. Mark Levine and Charniele Herring are unopposed in the 45th and 46th House Districts, respectively.

Voters should note a few polling place changes for 2019. Earlier this year, City Council voted to create two new precincts, which have been in effect since the 2019 primary. The new Olympus precinct votes at Olympus Condominium (6301 Stevenson Avenue) and affects boundary lines of the current Tucker, Beatley and Cameron Station precincts. The AlexRenew precinct votes at AlexRenew Environmental Center (1800 Limerick Street) and impacts the boundary lines of the current Lee Center and Lyles Crouch precincts. You can view the City of Alexandria's map of precincts and list of polling places online. In addition, the voting location for precinct 203 has temporarily moved from Agudas Achim (2908 Valley Drive) to the Art Gallery at Convergence (1801 Quaker Lane).
