Alexandria kids headed back to classes on Tuesday. Here are some glimpses into the first day around the city.

ALEXANDRIA, VA—More than 15,000 Alexandria students from elementary school children to rising seniors, went back to school Tuesday, Sept. 4.
Among the highlights for the first day was the opening of the new Ferdinand T. Day Elementary School, named after the first African-American school board chair in the state. The school features a STEM-focused curriculum with literacy, science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
Alexandria City Public Schools also welcomed a new superintendent this year—Dr. Gregory C. Hutchings, Jr. He's an ACPS graduate and has worked for the district previously. He was a superintendent in Cleveland, Ohio before returning to his hometown.
