Store clerks can be charged with a misdemeanor under Virginia law by selling alcohol to underage kids. Selling alcohol to a minor or not asking for proper identification is considered a Class 1 misdemeanor, according to Virginia code.

Police did not say where in the city the check will take place but remind residents any business can be checked. The one-day check is part of an effort to prevent underage people from purchasing alcohol and ensure store clerks and managers are properly educated on the law. The last underage alcohol compliance check was on June 1.
