Armed Robber Sentenced For Pair Of Crimes In Alexandria

Two armed robberies at an Alexandria Subway were among the crimes he had been charged for in the DC area.

ALEXANDRIA, VA—A man charged in a string of robberies in the DC region has been sentenced for two 2016 armed incidents that happened in Alexandria.

Matthew Alex Hardy, 28, of Fairfax County, has been sentenced to 33 years in the penitentiary with 19 years suspended for armed robberies at the Hoffman Town Center Subway. The sentence is on the condition of 20 years of good behavior, 10 years of supervised probation, no contact with the robbery victims and paying restitution.

He has also pleaded guilty to a robbery in Arlington and was sentenced to an additional five years in the penitentiary, consecutive to the Alexandria sentence, bringing his total sentence to 19 years.

According to prosecutors, Hardy threatened Subway employees with a gun and stole money on Nov. 12, 2016, and again on Nov. 19, 2016. Alexandria Police identified him as the suspect after he was tied to similar robberies throughout the region.

Hardy had been serving a five-year penitentiary sentence in Maryland for robbery and was extradited to Alexandria on these charges. Hardy has remained incarcerated at the Alexandria Adult Detention Center and will return to serve his sentence in Maryland. After completing the Maryland sentence, he will serve his penitentiary sentence in Virginia.
