ICYMI: Buzz Bakeshop Reopens with Star Cake Designer at the Helm

Buzz Bakery first opened on Slaters Lane in Alexandria almost 10 years ago.

“That’s a whole lot of morning muffins, indulgent treats for you and the kids, birthdays and baby showers that we have had the privilege of celebrating with you. And now we’ve got a very big milestone of our own to share!” the shop notes in an email to customers Friday.

The doors have reopened this weekend, as Buzz Bakeshop, at their Slaters Lane location after a week-long renovation. Buzz also has some other big news: Maggie Austin, the internationally acclaimed couture cake designer, is in the kitchen, as Culinary Director. There will be a new menu along with the new look.

Instead of her famed towering confections, Austin is opening her family recipe book and sharing her freshly baked cupcakes, rich fudgy brownies, decadent cream cheese-filled pumpkin muffins, and even her mom’s signature cornmeal thumbprint cookies with jam with you, Buzz Bakeshop notes.

From cinnamon swirl crumb-cake to vegan chocolate chip cookies, Austin’s creations are now--and for the first time ever--available to everyone, and most importantly her neighbors, Buzz Bakeshop says. The new menu will continue to expand and grow at both locations (there’s another on in Arlington) as Austin brings more of her favorites to life.

The Slaters Lane shop has received a full renovation and was set to reopen this week with an elegant new design. An open kitchen where you can watch Austin and her team put the finishing touches on their creations, new various seating areas and a design made of vintage dessert plates is all part of the new look.

Maggie’s menu of new treats include:

• cornmeal cookie with cherry jam
• cinnamon swirl crumb cake
