The “Heart of Del Ray Award” is annually presented by the Del Ray Business Association during the Valentine’s Day holiday to the business that serves as the heart and soul of Del Ray. This year, more than 35 businesses were nominated which were then narrowed down to five. Voting, by the public, ended last Wednesday.

Caboose Cafe, located at 2419 Mount Vernon Ave. in Del Ray, will soon be celebrating its 12 year in business in Del Ray, after opening in spring 2004, owner Rhoda Worku said Wednesday morning. The business’s name is a nod to Del Ray’s railroad past and the Norfolk and Western red caboose that literally sits on the grounds across the street at the Mount Vernon Community School.

Worku said her restaurant is family-oriented, not only with her own family pitching in, but the cafe and bakery is also a magnet for local families; after school lets out, it’s usually hopping, she said, with children stopping in for an afternoon snack.

The restaurant serves up breakfast, lunch and dinner and offers Ethiopian and American cuisine including many vegan options. Hours are 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. excepts Sundays when the hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. See the location below:
