Charlie's On The Avenue Gets Beer Garden, Extended Hours

The newly-opened restaurant received City Council approval for outdoor seating, cornhole and more.

ALEXANDRIA, VA—On Sept. 15, Alexandria City Council approved an outdoor beer garden area and extended hours for the new Charlie's on the Avenue restaurant at at 1501 Mount Vernon Avenue.

The Council voted 6-1 based on a Planning Commission recommendation to add outdoor seating and change operating hours to 7 a.m.-1 a.m. indoors and 7 a.m.-10 p.m. outdoors. The restaurant will have 200 seats—76 indoors and 124 outdoors. The outdoor seating is on an adjacent corner lot at 1503-1505 Mount Vernon Avenue.

The newly-approved revisions include indoor entertainment, outdoor games such as cornhole, and outdoor music. The outdoor music was allowed under the condition of halting any amplified noise heard beyond the property after 9 p.m.

Two people provided testimony to the council in support of the restaurant. A few people previously expressed concerns about parking and noise to the Planning Commission.

The restaurant opened in the late summer at the former location of FireFlies, which closed last December. In March, the city approved a change in ownership, paving the way for Charlie's on the Avenue. The owners are the team behind Live Oak Restaurant, which opened in 2016.
