The city of Alexandria announced Tuesday afternoon that 68 taxis have been suspended from service after failing to obtain annual vehicle inspections. The suspensions take approximately 10 percent of the city's total taxicab fleet off the roads. Safety inspections on all taxicabs in Alexandria were to be completed by June 30. Operators that failed to get their vehicles inspected last week were allowed to work over the July 4 holiday weekend and were officially suspended Tuesday. The vehicles may return to service once inspections are passed. According to the release, "City officials expect that remaining taxicabs will be able to provide the necessary level of service to residents and visitors." In October 2010, the City Council passed that included dispatch quotas and other requirements.
