Colossal Rock Climbing Gym Coming to Crystal City: Report

A huge climbing gym is coming to Crystal City built by Maryland firm Earth Treks, according to a report by the company and ARLnow.

The company announced that a new location is opening next year; ARLnow reported on the location based on a State Corporation Commission filing.

The location will be the fifth climbing gym for Earth Treks, and its first located within the Washington, D.C. beltway. A grand opening is planned for late spring 2016.

The Maryland-based company is planning to open the gym at 1235 S. Clark Street, two blocks from the Crystal City Metro station, according to a State Corporation Commission filing, ARLnow reported. The address in the filing — 1235 S. Clark Street — is the same address as the Sport&Health Crystal Gateway fitness club.

Earth Treks’ newest facility will be industry-leading in amenities and size, according to the company. With a massive footprint exceeding 45,000 sq ft, the DC Metro location will be among the biggest climbing gyms in the nation.

How big you ask? Consider that the footprint of the new location is more than 50 percent bigger than Earth Treks Rockville—which is already ranked as the second biggest climbing gym in the nation. There will be 35,000 sq ft of climbing terrain, including more bouldering than any other Earth Treks gym, the company said.

The climbing facility will feature:

• A 35,000 sq ft climbing wall constructed by Walltopia, designed by Jason Kehl and packed with bouldering and roped terrain.
• Huge fitness and climbing training areas.
• Dedicated yoga and group fitness room.
• Private climbing teaching areas.
• High end locker rooms.
• Fully stocked gear shop.
