Columbus Day 2017: What's Open, Closed In Del Ray

Patch has compiled a list of what Del Ray offices and services are open and closed on Columbus Day.

ALEXANDRIA, VA—Columbus Day is considered a federal holiday, but it's not typically a holiday most get off work for. Even so, government offices and other services will take a break for the holiday.

City of Alexandria government offices will be closed for Columbus Day, as well as libraries and schools, while services like public transit and recreation centers will operate, although on a different schedule.

Here are the openings/closings to be aware of on Monday, Oct. 9.

City Offices: closed

Schools and Administrative Offices: Closed. The school district has a professional development day.

Animal shelter: The Vola Lawson Animal Shelter will be open for regular hours, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Animal visiting hours will begin at noon.

DASH and King Street Trolley: DASH bus service will operate on a Saturday schedule. The free King Street Trolley will operate on its normal schedule, every 10 to 15 minutes, between the King Street Metro Station and the Potomac River waterfront, from 10:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. See www.dashbus.com for more information.

Emergency hotlines: All emergency hotlines operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, including the child protective services hotline at 703-746-5800; the domestic violence hotline at 703-746-4911; the emergency services for mental health or substance abuse crisis hotline at 703-746-3401; the adult protective services hotline at 703-746-5778; and the sexual assault hotline at 703-683-7273.

Health Facilities: The Alexandria Health Department (4480 King St.), the Flora Krause Casey Health Center (1200 N. Howard St.) and the Teen Wellness Center at T.C. Williams High School (3329 King St.) will be closed on Oct. 9.

Historic sites: The Lyceum will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Gadsby's Tavern Museum and the Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and the Historic Alexandria Store from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. The Alexandria Black History Museum, Alexandria Archaeology Museum, Fort Ward Museum and the Friendship Firehouse Museum are closed on Mondays. Libraries: Libraries will be closed on Oct. 9, including the Alexandria Law Library (520 King Street).

Parking: Police will not enforce parking restrictions at metered spaces, residential permit parking districts and other areas with posted parking time limits on Oct. 9. It does not apply to permit parking in any location normally prohibited (parking zones, loading zones, or spaces for persons with disabilities). Temporary no-parking signs will be enforced.

Recreation and Arts Centers: The Chinquapin Park Recreation Center will be open from 6 a.m.-9 p.m., and the Charles Houston Recreation Center will be open from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. The Torpedo Factory Art Center will be open from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. All other recreation and art centers will be closed Oct. 9.

State Offices: The following Commonwealth of Virginia offices in Alexandria will be closed on October 9: the Circuit Court, Clerk of Circuit Court, General District Court, Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court, and Court Service Unit located in the Alexandria Courthouse at 520 King Street and the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) office on 2681 Mill Road.

Trash and Recycling: There will be no collections on Oct. 9. Collection services will be delayed by one day for the rest of the week. The Household Hazardous Waste & Electronics Recycling Center will be closed on Oct. 9.
