Del Ray Beer Garden Moves Forward Despite Calls For Deferral

Four people spoke out at a city meeting against the extended hours and potential noise from the beer garden.

Despite some resident opposition, a proposal to change Señor Chicken (3410 Mount Vernon Avenue) to The Secret Garten with expanded hours, alcohol sales and a beer garden outside is moving forward. The Planning Commission allowed the measure to move forward to the City Council, which will consider it Saturday, March 17.

Under the proposal, Secret Garten would serve sandwiches, sausages, burgers, and imported craft beers with a focus on locally-made ingredients. A 30-seat beer garden would replace six parking spaces in the rear. Take-out alcohol would also be offered through "create your own" six, 12, 18, and 24 packs and as growlers.

Proposed hours are 11 a.m. - 2 a.m. indoors and daily 11 a.m.-9 p.m., Sunday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday outdoors. Señor Chicken currently closes at 9 p.m. Sunday and 10 p.m. all other days. Three people spoke in favor of the proposal and four asked for a deferral to address resident concerns on extended hours, outdoor seating and the potential noise and crime-related impacts from alcohol sales. Community members also disapproved of limiting parking spaces due to implications on residential parking. The Mount Vernon Community Court at Sanborn Place is next to the restaurant.
