Del Ray Nominated For 'Best Gayborhood' Around DC

ALEXANDRIA, VA—Del Ray is dubbed as a place "where main street still exists." You might be surprised to learn that it's being seen in other ways.

Del Ray is one of five places nominated for "Best Gayborhood" in the DC area for Washington Blade's "Best of Gay DC" awards.

Maybe it was the city's resolution of inclusiveness passed after the 2016 election. Or the restaurants classified as LGBT friendly. Perhaps the messages of unity shared after racist flyers appeared in the neighborhood did not go unnoticed. Either way, there's a chance it could beat out the nation's capital.

Del Ray is the only nominee from Virginia in this category. The other locations are Adams Morgan, Dupont Circle, Logan Circle and Shaw.

Alexandria could also be recognized for "Best Staycation" in Old Town and for a number of business awards. These include:

• Best Local Brewery: Port City Brewing Company
• Best Caterer: Rocklands Barbeque and Grilling Company, Windows Catering Company
• Best Chef: Jamie Leeds, Hank’s Oyster Bar, Hank’s Pasta Bar
• Best Ice Cream/Gelato: The Dairy Godmother Frozen Custard
• Best Pizza: Pizzeria Paradiso
• Best Adult Store: Lotus Blooms
• Best LGBT Event: NOVA Pride

Anyone can vote online through Oct. 1 on Washington Blade's website. Winners will be announced Oct. 19.
