'Del Ray Vibe' Interviews Jim Moran

Moran, 70, will serve as the grand marshal Thursday at Del Ray’s 40th annual Turkey Trot. He is now retired from Congress, after representing Virginia’s 8th District in the U.S. House of Representatives, from 1991 to 2015. He is also a former mayor of the City.

- Roots in Del Ray: Moran bought his first home in Del Ray, at 213 Oxford Ave. E, for $32,000, in the ‘70s. “I remember going down Mount Vernon Avenue...when I saw the house I was just taken with it.”
- Free time: “I treasure my weekends now because I haven’t had a free weekend for 35 years while I was in elective office,” he says in the 30-plus minute interview. “It’s very different to have time to myself.”
- King George retreat: Moran said he’s bought a home in the woods with a pond in King George, Virginia.
- Del Ray traffic: “There isn’t a lot of parking, it was originally a streetcar community,” he said.
- What makes Del Ray special: “This is kind of an oasis, where everyone knows your name.”
