DIY Del Ray: Welcome to Del Ray, UpCycle Creative Reuse Center

We are so lucky that UpCycle Creative Reuse Center (CRC) has opened their studio space in our neighborhood. UpCycle CRC is a nonprofit that collects reusable items to use for arts and crafts and learning purposes. They’re currently running summer camps and a weekly open studio time in their new space at 1712 Mt. Vernon Avenue. And they have a store in their space where they sell items at affordable prices. Both teachers by training, Susan Miranda and Kelley Organek are the brains behind the operation.

The back wall of the store is packed to the brim with yarn, fabric, and sewing notions. I found some nice wool sweater pieces to felt at home for a wreath project in the works. I love that I know exactly where I can find a jar when I need one. Future Del Ray food swappers, take note.

In one room of the space, a mosaic project depicting the George Washington Masonic Temple is laid out for anyone to work on, especially during the Wednesday drop-in studio time from 3-6 p.m. (More details about the drop-in studio and fees are on their web site.) This past Wednesday, they also guided participants in making hand-made paper.

UpCycle has a bookshelf with craft books you can thumb through during your visit. And they have a workbench that anyone can use during open studio time, stocked with paper cutters, saws, glue guns, and more. They plan to add more tools over time as well.

It’s really loads of fun to visit UpCycle. If you want to donate supplies, they are happy to add them to their collection. You can see their current wish list on their web site. While I was there, they unpacked a donation box and pulled out a beautiful unfinished crocheted shawl. It comes with the yarn to finish the work and the pattern. Just one of the many treasures you’ll find at UpCycle.
