Driver In Fatal Alexandria Pedestrian Crash Pleads Guilty

A driver pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter for a crash that killed a pedestrian on a sidewalk in Alexandria.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — The driver in a November 2021 fatal pedestrian crash in the Arlandria neighborhood pleaded guilty in Alexandria court.

Fredy Ortiz Dominguez, 46, of Hyattsville, Maryland, was charged in the crash that killed Roy Saravia Alvarez on Nov. 13, 2021. Ortiz Dominguez pleaded guilty to an involuntary manslaughter charge on Thursday, July 28.

According to a news release from the Alexandria commonwealth's attorney, Saravia Alvarez was struck on the sidewalk after leaving a bus at Mount Vernon Avenue and W. Glebe Road. Prosecutors say Ortiz Dominguez was making a left turn from northbound Mount Vernon Avenue onto W. Glebe Road and drove onto the sidewalk, hitting Saravia Alvarez.

Saravia Alvarez was pinned under the vehicle. According to prosecutors, Ortiz Dominguez used his gas pedal to rock his vehicle back and forth over six minutes with Saravia Alvarez still underneath. Bystanders tried to get Ortiz Dominguez to stop pressing the gas pedal, but he continued until police arrived, prosecutors allege. The fire department rescued Saravia Alvarez from underneath the vehicle, but he was pronounced dead.

According to the commonwealth's attorney, Ortiz Dominguez and Saravia Alvarez were not known to each other. Drugs or alcohol were not believed to be factors in the crash.

Sentencing is scheduled for Sept. 15. Ortiz Dominguez faces a sentence up to 10 years in prison.
