Jefferson Davis Highway Renaming: City To Collect Public Input

Alexandria took another step removing the Confederate leader's name from the U.S. 1 road.

ALEXANDRIA, VA -- After the Alexandria City Council voted to remove the name of Confederate leader Jefferson Davis from U.S. 1 in 2016, the city has taken another step to move forward. The city has appointed an advisory group Friday to collect feedback from the public, WTOP reported.

After a public hearing and online survey over the summer, the advisory group could make a recommendation to Alexandria’s City Manager in the fall, spokesman Craig T. Fifer told WTOP. The change would apply to the portion of the road between Arlington County and the north end of Old Town Alexandria.

Fifer said changing road signs would cost the city around $20,000.
