The Alexandria Sheriff's Office warns residents about a jury duty phone scam asking for a payment.

ALEXANDRIA, VA—The Alexandria Sheriff's office is warning residents about phone scammers claiming to be sheriff's deputies or other law enforcement personnel.
Authorities say several residents received phone calls claiming they missed jury duty and would need to pay a fine or be arrested. In the scam, the caller attempt to obtain personal, credit card and bank account information.
If residents receive the calls, they should hang up immediately, even if the caller makes a threat of arrest.

The sheriff's office says it does not make these calls or ask for payments by phone, and official requests for jury duty in Alexandria courts are sent through the mail. According to the National Center for State Courts, court authorities will not ask for personal or payment information for failure to report for jury duty.
Residents that have been victims of scams should call Alexandria Police at 703-746-4444. If you're unsure if a sheriff's deputy made a call, contact the Alexandria Sheriff’s Office at 703-746-4114.
