After March 9, you can still visit your neighborhood school weekdays between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. to register for kindergarten, or call to make an appointment to register at a different time.

This year, parents will be able to fill out registration forms online starting March 9, although it is still necessary to visit your neighborhood school to show proof of identification and address, according to ACPS.

If your child needs health insurance, visit www.famis.org for information about Family Access to Medical Insurance Security (FAMIS).

According to Virginia law, your child must be five years old on or before Sept. 30 to register for kindergarten. There is no deadline for registration, but ACPS urges parents to register early. To be admitted, a child must meet all documentation and health requirements. If you decide not to register your child for kindergarten, you must contact the school system in writing.

Children who will be six years old on or before Sept. 30, must, by law, attend school. Parents of students who are starting school as first-graders should follow kindergarten registration procedures.

Parents of students transferring to ACPS from other school districts should enroll their children as soon as possible upon moving to Alexandria. Registration dates for transfer students are ongoing.

Where do I register?

If your child speaks English and was born in the United States, you must register at your home school, even if your child will attend a different ACPS school. To determine your home school, visit the online Attendance Zone Locator.

If a language other than English is spoken in your home, or your child was born outside the United States, register your child for school at the Office of English Language Learner (ELL) Services. All families who may need assistance with English may also register at the ELL Center located on the first floor at 1340 Braddock Place. Please call 703-619-8332 for more information.

Proof of residing in the City of Alexandria

Parents registering their child must have proof of residency. Two documents proving Alexandria City residency are required.
