Labor Day 2017: What's Open, Closed In Del Ray

As the end of summer approaches, here's what will be open and closed on Labor Day in Del Ray.

ALEXANDRIA, VA—If you happen to work at the pool or beach, Labor Day might be one of the busiest days of the year. But city government and other services will take a break for the holiday.

City of Alexandria government offices will be closed for Labor Day, as well as libraries and schools, while services like public transit and recreation centers will operate, although on a different schedule.

Here are the openings/closings to be aware of on Monday, Sept. 4.

City Offices: closed

Schools and Administrative Offices: closed (First day of school is Tuesday, Sept. 5)

Animal shelter: The Vola Lawson Animal Shelter will be open for weekend hours on Sept. 4 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Animal visiting hours will begin at noon.

DASH and King Street Trolley: DASH bus service will operate on a Sunday schedule. The free King Street Trolley will operate on its normal schedule, every 10 to 15 minutes, between the King Street Metro Station and the Potomac River waterfront, from 10 a.m. to 10:15 p.m. See www.dashbus.com for more information.

Emergency hotlines: All emergency hotlines operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, including the child protective services hotline at 703-746-5800; the domestic violence hotline at 703-746-4911; the emergency services for mental health or substance abuse crisis hotline at 703-746-3401; the adult protective services hotline at 703-746-5778; and the sexual assault hotline at 703-683-7273.

Health Facilities: The Alexandria Health Department (4480 King St.), the Flora Krause Casey Health Center (1200 N. Howard St.) and the Teen Wellness Center at T.C. Williams High School (3329 King St.) will be closed on Sept. 4.

Historic sites: The Lyceum, Gadsby's Tavern Museum and the Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum will be open regular hours from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sept. 4 and the Historic Alexandria Store will be open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. The Alexandria Black History Museum, the Alexandria Archaeology Museum, the Fort Ward Museum and the Friendship Fire House Museum will be closed. Libraries: Libraries will be closed Sept. 2 through Sept. 4. The Alexandria Law Library (520 King St.) will be closed on Sept. 4.

Outdoor Pools: The Old Town and Memorial outdoor pools will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sept. 4.

Parking: Police will not enforce parking restrictions at metered spaces, residential permit parking districts and other areas with posted parking time limits on Sept. 4. It does not apply to permit parking in any location normally prohibited (parking zones, loading zones, or spaces for persons with disabilities). Temporary no-parking signs will be enforced.

Recreation and Arts Centers: The Chinquapin Park Recreation Center will be open from 6 a.m.-3 p.m., and the Charles Houston Recreation Center will be open from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. The Torpedo Factory Art Center will be open from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. All recreation and art centers will be closed Sept. 4.

State Offices: The following Commonwealth of Virginia offices in Alexandria will be closed on Sept. 4: Circuit Court, Clerk of Circuit Court, General District Court, Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court, and Court Service Unit located in the Alexandria Courthouse at 520 King St.; and the Department of Motor Vehicles on 2681 Mill Rd.

Trash and Recycling: There will be no collections on Sept. 4. Collection services will be delayed by one day for the rest of the week. The Household Hazardous Waste & Electronics Recycling Center will be closed on Sept. 4.
