Murder Case in Death of Alexandria Activist Lenwood Harris Goes to Jury

The jury in Prince George's County, MD, is set to get the case Tuesday morning.

The case against the man charged in the killing of an Alexandria activist Lenwood Harris is set to go to a Prince George's County jury Tuesday morning.

Tyrone Lewis is facing murder and carjacking charges in the death of Harris, 53, who went missing from Alexandria in September 2011. After a months-long search, his body was found in a Fort Washington well on Jan. 26, 2012.

Lewis' co-defendant, Linwood Johnson, pled guilty to 2nd-degree murder, robbery with a deadly weapon and related charges and is scheduled to be sentenced in October.

A graduate of T.C. Williams High School and one-time business owner on Mt. Vernon Avenue, Harris was active in local politics and community issues.

Harris founded the nonprofit Operation H.O.P.E. that presented the One Love Community Festival each year. The organization is dedicated to providing Alexandria citizens with alternative public services. Harris outfitted in-need kids at the festival with new backpacks and classroom supplies for the school year.
