No Changes to Handicapped Parking Ordinances

City is developing pilot program

The Alexandria City Council agreed not to make any changes to its handicapped parking ordinances on Tuesday.

The city currently follows state code in the regulation of parking for vehicles with handicapped plates or placards.

City staff is developing plans for a two-year pilot program that would allow disabled persons employed within Alexandria that don’t have off-street parking to purchase a permit that would allow them to park in metered zones for up to 12 hours.

Under initial plans for the program, permits could be granted to those with a DMV-issued registration for persons with disabilities or verification from an employer that an applicant is employed in Alexandria and does not have accessible, off-street parking.

There’s discussion of an annual renewal of the permits along with required verifications.

"We need to look into the abuse of placards," Councilman Rob Krupicka said.

The plan will be submitted to council later this year.
