Officer Charged For Accidentally Firing Gun In Del Ray School

No one was injured when the gun accidentally went off at George Washington Middle School.

ALEXANDRIA, VA—A grand jury has charged an Alexandria school resource officer Monday for accidentally firing his gun at George Washington Middle School back in March.

Carl Savoy, 27, was charged with reckless handling of a firearm and destruction of property, which are both misdemeanor charges. A five year veteran of the Alexandria Police Department, he is on administrative leave without pay after being charged.

Savoy turned himself in Monday afternoon and was released on his own recognizance.

No one was injured during the March 13 incident inside his office. Police say the officer checked for potential injuries in the area and contacted his supervisor and school staff. Police launched an investigation following the incident and placed Savoy on routine administrative leave pending the investigation result.
