Potomac Yard Metro Environmental Impact Study Underway

The City of Alexandria is rolling its environmental impact study for a potential Metro station at Potomac Yard this week. The city will be holding two scoping meetings on Thursday at Cora Kelly Recreation Center, one at and another at

The public is invited to learn about the study, ask questions and leave comments on the project and its alternatives.

Attendees will be able view display boards and informative handouts about the study and talk with project staff, which includes members of the Federal Transit Authority, the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, the National Park Service and the city.

At a City Council meeting in January, it was revealed that WMATA had placed a project manager on the Potomac Yard proposal with experience in constructing a station on an existing track, including the New York Avenue stop on the red line.

Thursday’s meetings will also include a short presentation covering the project’s purpose, an initial set of alternative locations and discussion of the environmental impact of a station.

The stretch from National Airport to the Braddock Road stop on the blue and yellow lines is the longest stretch of track without a stop inside the Beltway. The creation of a station is considered key to some of the development projects in Potomac Yard.  

Complete funding for the station has yet to be secured. Council has approved on the Potomac Yard landmass that is scheduled for redevelopment. The council has yet to vote on .
