Ribbon Cutting Saturday for New Crystal City-Potomac Yard Bus Service

The new bus will provide faster, more reliable service along the congested Route 1 corridor between Crystal City and Braddock Road metros.

City of Alexandria Mayor William D. Euille and the members of Alexandria City Council are welcoming a new bus service to the area and are inviting the public to a ribbon-cutting ceremony Saturday, Aug. 23, beginning at 9:30 a.m., at the Transitway station at the intersection of Route 1 and Swann Avenue.

Light refreshments will be served. In case of inclement weather, the ceremony will be held at Alexandria Fire Station 209, at 2800 Main Line Blvd.

The program will open with remarks by Euille, Mary Hughes Hynes, Timothy Lovain, Matthew Welbes, Jennifer Mitchell and Jack Requa. Following the ceremony, special guests and the public will be invited to board new Metroway buses for a short ride on the Transitway, from the Swann Avenue Station along the Metroway route and back.

The new bus will provide faster, more reliable service along the congested Route 1 corridor between the Crystal City and Braddock Road Metrorail stations. Service will run every 12 minutes on weekdays and 20 minutes on weekends from the Braddock Road Metro Station to the Crystal City Metro Station.

  • Monday-Thursday: 5:30 a.m. - 10 p.m.
  • Friday: 5:30 a.m. - midnight
  • Saturday: 6:30 a.m. - midnight
  • Sunday: 7:30 a.m. - 10 p.m.

Amenities will include a branded bus fleet, high-visibility crosswalks, and near-level boarding at stations. This project was fully funded through federal and state grants, local transportation improvement funds and developer contributions.

WMATA will operate its new Metroway service on the Transitway, starting at 7:30 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 24. This service will feature the same fare as Metrobus, but will take advantage of the dedicated bus lanes to offer faster, more reliable travel times.
